Remaining at an amateur level while giving 100% effort is unrealistic and yields unfavored results. Today’s age of music offers American listeners a variety of sounds that they can choose from. However, the international presence of foreign tunes is still yet to crack the pavement. Although we have seen huge waves in House/Dancehall music and Latino pop – with acts such as J Balvin, Rosalía, Anitta, etc. – There is still a lack of mainstream acceptance for other parts of the world. Especially, in francophone regions. However, the scene is becoming brighter by the minute, as many have made it to the world center stage – and soon to be there: 5 Prcnt.
The collective consist of four members: Ralph Ateba, Michel Nguegang, Franck Dipanda, and Ian Nana. All of whom are Cameroonian and a part of the African Diaspora. Through mutual family friends, they were able to come together based on the premise of being able to express themselves to the fullest extent. Although they make music together, each member is dedicated to sharing their own individual work in their current countries/states. Providing a clear indication of their African roots within their music.
Ralph Ateba (Rvlph)
Born in Cameroon, Ralph has always been keen on his love for music. At an early age, he quickly dived into the growing sounds within the french culture. Especially, the rising hip-hop scene producing major francophone talents such as Maître Gims, Nekfeu, Frenetik, Ashh, La Fève, Damso, Josman, Black M, and many more. The gloomy, dark, yet embracing new ambiance grabbed his attention instantly.
Not only familiar with the sounds around him, but Ralph also studied heavily on many American Artists. In particular, his interest peaked when his father introduced him to Lil Wayne. These influences, along with his Cameroonian background, shaped the sound that he strives to achieve. In the beginning, creating music was a passionate hobby just for fun. Michel Nguegang (Destro)
Living in Windy City, Michel is no stranger to the immense amount of talent brewing within his hometown. Iconic acts such as Kanye West, Chance the Rapper, Saba, & Lupe Fiasco have paved a way for many to follow within the hip-hop circuit in Chicago. However, his exposure to hip-hop began in Cameroon, where he drew inspiration from Damso, a Belgian-Congolese rapper, singer, and songwriter. Wanting to help artist express their vision through music, Michel decided to hone his skills by becoming a producer under the alias “Destro.”
His signature style of dark melodies, eerie tones, and heavy bass (influenced by Metro Boomin), drives at the heart of the listener. He is ruthless with his production, leaving nothing to waste. Every sound and instrument is placed for a reason. Having undergone many challenges in his life, Destro emphasizes these hardships within his music: Embracing the darkness. Franck Dipanda (Digital Dash)
Based in ATL, Franck has always been keen on the ever-growing hip-hop scene that’s been brewing recently. Influential talents such as Gunna, Young Thug, Future, Metro Boomin, and Lil Baby have all played an impactful role in Franck’s production: the emphasis on rhythm, flow, arrangement, and beat patterns. For him, it’s critical that the finished product leaves a lasting impression on the listener. It needs to have a vibe.
However, even with all these influences, Franck is still able to differentiate himself and produce music that has his own imprint. His latest work “Creepin,” which includes sample chopping, demonstrates his ability to innovate in any setting. Check out the instrumental below.
Ian Nana (Ian N)
Known as the brain of the group, Ian has been surrounded by music ever since an early age. Starting at his church, he participated in all musical aspects: from the band to the choir. Here, he would learn how to play multiple instruments and carefully craft his voice.
His gospel roots play an influential factor in his sound which is displayed through the genres of R&B, Afro, Alternative, & Pop. Blazing a trail in his hometown Maryland, Ian isn’t afraid to go against the grain and fuse all these sounds into one. While at the same time, letting his vulnerability rise to the surface.
